Is Neem Extract Good for Your Teeth?

Posted on 4/17/2016 by Giri Palani
A woman consulting with her dentist about neem extract.Dental patients are becoming more and more interested in natural remedies when it comes to their oral health. The neem tree is one such option that people are exploring, as neem has been used for centuries in order to treat bacterial infections and to maintain oral health.

Recently, scientists have examined just how effective neem mouthwash could be for treating gingivitis, and their findings were published within the Indian Journal of Periodontology.

What is Neem?

Neem is a tree that is native to India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, and its seeds, leaves, and bark are used to make certain medications. Some of the most common disorders that neem is used to treat include leprosy, skin ulcers, gum disease, skin ulcers, and conditions of the blood vessels and heart. Less frequently, the fruit, flower, and fruit may be used.

How Does Neem Work?

Dental researchers are under the impression that 0.19% neem extract can be added to mouthwash in order to reduce gum disease. It is thought that this extract can have two major benefits – reducing tissue inflammation and offering an antibacterial aspect that can kill oral bacteria responsible for cavities, decay, and gum disease.

What Did the Study Find?

The study involving neem examined 45 patients separated into three groups. One group received neem mouthwash, another was given saline solution, and the third was given a chlorhexidine mouthwash. Patients were then compared after one week and three weeks, and it was found that patients using the neem and chlorhexidine mouthwashes experienced significant gum health improvement.

The results of this study showed that neem was an effective and viable dental treatment for people who don’t want to use chemical mouthwashes. In places like India where poverty is quite common, this is a great solution that allows people to care for their mouths without an excessive expense.
