I'm an Adult. Do I Need to Wear a Sports Guard?

Posted on 11/15/2025 by Giri Palani
Mouthguard. As an adult, you might think that mouthguards are just for kids playing sports. But the truth is, anyone who participates in any activity that could result in a blow to the face should wear a mouthguard.

This includes not only traditional sports like football, basketball, and hockey, but also activities like skateboarding, biking, and even rock climbing. In fact, according to the American Dental Association, adults are more likely to suffer a dental injury than children.

So, why is it so important to wear a mouthguard, even as an adult?

The Benefits of Wearing a Mouthguard

Mouthguards offer a number of important benefits, including:
•  Protecting your teeth from damage. This is the most obvious benefit of wearing a mouthguard. A mouthguard can help to prevent your teeth from being chipped, cracked, or even knocked out.
•  Protecting your gums and tongue. A mouthguard can also help to protect your gums and tongue from being cut or bruised.
•  Reducing the risk of concussion. Some studies have shown that wearing a mouthguard can help to reduce the risk of concussion.
•  Making it easier to breathe. A mouthguard can help to keep your airway open, which can make it easier to breathe during physical activity.

Different Types of Mouthguards

There are three main types of mouthguards:
•  Stock mouthguards: These are the least expensive type of mouthguard and can be found at most sporting goods stores. However, they are not as comfortable or as well-fitting as custom-made mouthguards.
•  Boil-and-bite mouthguards: These mouthguards are made of a thermoplastic material that becomes soft when it is boiled. You then bite down on the mouthguard to mold it to your teeth. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are more comfortable than stock mouthguards, but they are not as well-fitting as custom-made mouthguards.
•  Custom-made mouthguards: These mouthguards are made by a dentist and are the most comfortable and best-fitting type of mouthguard.

How to Choose the Right Mouthguard

The best type of mouthguard for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are not sure which type of mouthguard is right for you, talk to your dentist.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a mouthguard:
•  The level of protection you need. If you participate in a high-impact sport, you will need a mouthguard that offers more protection than if you participate in a low-impact sport.
•  Your budget. Custom-made mouthguards are the most expensive type of mouthguard, but they are also the most comfortable and best-fitting. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are a more affordable option, but they are not as comfortable or as well-fitting. Stock mouthguards are the least expensive option, but they are not as comfortable or as well-fitting as the other two types of mouthguards.
•  Your comfort. The most important thing is that you choose a mouthguard that is comfortable to wear. If you are not comfortable wearing your mouthguard, you are less likely to wear it regularly.

Conclusion

Wearing a mouthguard is an important part of protecting your oral health. If you participate in any activity that could result in a blow to the face, be sure to wear a mouthguard. Talk to your dentist to find out which type of mouthguard is right for you.
