Obesity And Gum Disease: What Is The Link?

Posted on 5/9/2022 by Giri Palani
Obesity And Gum Disease: What Is The Link?Obesity is a big problem in America. The CDC estimates that about 67 percent of adults are obese and about 34 percent of those with this condition are considered to be severely obese. But what many people don't realize is that, out of the many health risks linked to obesity, gum disease is one of them. At first glance, you may not be able to understand the connection, but current research reveals a clear link between periodontal disease and obesity.

Health risks of Obesity

There are many health risks associated with obesity. From heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, infertility, reflux, and even cancer, obesity comes with many harmful effects. Many of these diseases appear to have a direct link to weight, but what about gum disease?

The Connection

Recent studies indicate that individuals who have excess weight have two times the incidence of suffering the periodontal disease. Moreover, people struggling with severe obesity have three times the occurrence of periodontal disease. Often, the reason for having higher odds of periodontal disease is believed to be associated with higher chemical signals that are produced by the fat cells. These substances are pretty often linked with an overall inflammatory response within the body. The inflammatory response reduces immunity, and in turn, increases the likelihood of having periodontal disease. Besides, it is believed that the inflammatory response reduces blood flow to the gum, thus making them more susceptible to gum disease.

Another connection between periodontal disease and obesity is lifestyle markers that are common among individuals suffering from obesity. Too much sugar consumption has been associated with obesity in addition to periodontal disease. Get more information about the dangers of obesity to oral health.
