Lasting Teeth Whitening Results

If you are dissatisfied with the brightness of your smile, you are not alone. Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic procedures we perform at Palani Center for Dental Implants. Professional whitening is both safer and more effective than store-bought alternatives, allowing you to achieve noticeable, lasting results.

How Your Teeth Stain

There are two types of staining: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic stains occur when the inner structure of the tooth, called dentin, darkens or yellows over time. This type of staining is often caused by factors such as excessive fluoride exposure during childhood, tetracycline antibiotics, or facial trauma. Unfortunately, intrinsic stains do not typically respond to whitening treatments.

Extrinsic stains, on the other hand, are caused by pigment-rich foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, and wine. Tobacco use is also a major contributor. Because enamel is porous, it absorbs these stains over time. During your initial appointment, Dr. Giri Palani will determine whether your stains can be effectively treated with professional whitening.

Professional In-Office Teeth Whitening Procedure

During your appointment, we begin by placing a protective barrier over your gums. A high-concentration whitening gel is then applied to the surfaces of your teeth and left on for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. In some cases, an LED light may be used to activate the gel and enhance results. The gel may be reapplied multiple times during the visit until the desired level of whitening is achieved. Some patients may require more than one appointment.

Before treatment begins, we may take photographs to establish a baseline and track your progress. By the end of treatment, your teeth may be up to eight shades whiter. Some temporary sensitivity is possible, so we may recommend using a desensitizing toothpaste following your appointment.

At-Home Whitening

Teeth whitening is not permanent, and stains can return over time depending on your diet and habits. To maintain your results, we may recommend a custom at-home whitening system. This includes a professional-strength whitening gel and a custom-fitted tray created from impressions of your teeth. Custom trays provide more even and effective results than over-the-counter options.

Although the at-home gel is milder than in-office treatments, it is still stronger and more effective than store-bought products. Many patients find that whitening toothpastes, strips, and rinses do not deliver the results they are looking for.
